Description: The West Virginia Glass Mfg Co located in Martins Ferry OH began operations in 1882 under the company name Elson Glass Co. Due to ownership changes and economic conditions of the times, the factory changed names no less than five times, finally closing permanently in 1903. During the 1890s the company developed blown opalescent glass examples as well as solid colors in several patterns including polkadot. This attractive pattern has vertical rows of circles with a four lobed top. The original pieces of this pattern came on the market place in about 1893-1895. The opalescent pattern was replicated a few years later by the Northwood company; during the 1940s and 1950s Fenton also produced pieces in this line. All these later examples came in different shapes and sizes; this particular shape pitcher only came to market during the 1890s and never appeared to be reproduced. Besides the shape and color, the distinctive top rim adds interest to the piece. Found primarily in opalescent colors of cranberry, blue and white, the company produced solid colors in polkadot including the citrine yellow hue. I have never seen a pitcher in this color; evidently it is extremely rare in the marketplace today. Several pictures show it reacts brilliantly and the present of ultraviolet light. The piece stands 9 1/4” tall and measures 6 1/4” across the broadest area of the body at the base of the handle. In excellent original condition with absolutely no damage or repairs noted. I see no cracks or heat check anywhere in the handle or at points of attachment, I see no staining or residue on the inside from use. I will mention due to factory conditions of the time, glass often picked up ash flecks during the process, I have included a picture of one such speck. Not a detraction, mentioned for accuracy. A rare chance to pick up an extremely hard to find sizable example from the Victorian era. Due to the value and size, this example will need to be double boxed, shipped UPS ground fully insured. Please view all pictures as they are considered part of the description. Please check back to my listings often as I will be posting numerous fine examples of glass, pottery and porcelain in the near future. Thank you.
