Description: This is a Vintage Signed Nestor TAXCO Sterling Mixed Metals Dual Purpose Brooch / Pendant. This piece is very reminscent of a Los Castillos mixed metals piece we sold a while back. At the time of this listing, we are listing several Mexican mixed metals pieces. We also have a quite a number of other listings of vintage signed Mexican jewelry listings, and as well as other antique and vintage jewelry listings. This beautiful brooch is also very versatile since it can not only serve the dual purpose of being worn as either a brooch or a pendant, but in additional when it is worn as a brooch, the abstract Modernist design lends itself to being worn in many different orientations as shown in a few example photos. For use as a pendant, the bale is open at the bottom so you might want to I consult your jeweler regarding wearing the pendant safely on a chain as a necklace. The background of the brooch is a lovely stone mosaic. The mixed metal inlay appears to be sterling, brass, and copper, skillfully combined with the stone background. The brooch is about 1 7/8" x 1 3/8". The photos are closeups. You can see the size relative to a US dime and quarter, and along a ruler, in a pair of photos. The brooch weighs 16.69 grams, over 1/2 Troy ounce and it has a nice heavy feel. The circular mark was double / over stamped. You can clearly see NESTOR and the "HECHO EN TAX" (the CO are not easy to read). There also appears to be "925" at the center of the mark, also part of the over struck mark. The piece is also marked "STERLING", and there in an Eagle 3 mark, also indicating TAXCO. The 3 is very clear, but the Eagle mark border can be seen but is not fully struck. I found an attribution for this silver artisan in "The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks, New Revised Edition (2nd Edition), page 127, the "Designer, Silversmith, and Trademarks" where the top and better identified designers are listed, including photo examples of some of their marks, and well as biographical information for the best known designers, such as William Spratling, Margo De Taxco, Hector Aguilar, and Antonio Pineda. The Nestor entry in this section has three photos but no biographical sketch. The Eagle marks attributed as seen for this designer are 1 and 3, consistent with this piece. The Mexican government Eagle Number Marking system was mandated for use from 1948 to 1980, providing a time frame for the creation of this piece. This piece is thought to likely be a relatively earlier piece within that time frame but we do not have any specific information in that regard. ConditionApart from the anomaly of the over struck mark, original to the creation of the piece, the brooch is in excellent condition. The locking clasp is in good working order. However, I did note that the open position of the lock is not at either extremity of the rotation of the finding, so you may need to get used to the correct point by feel if your are pinning the brooch on yourself.
