Description: Vintage original Handcrafted rattan shoulder bag from Mendi Southern Highlands region of Papua New Guinea. This is an excellent example of the distinctive rattan bag carried by men in the Mendi area of the Southern Highlands. It is made from one piece of woven rattan joined at the sides by bilum type knotted weaving and has a short handle of the same bilum fiber. The top edge has been trimmed with a herringbone stitched or knotted row of the same material. Unlined. See photos for condition. There is a unraveled hole in the side and also at the top of the strap. Measures: 10" wide x 9" tall x 2 1/2" deep (when stuffed with paper.) The strap drop is 8". There aren't many, if any, of these available anymore. A unique example of an indigenous craft.
