Description: An antique balance scale from Kyoto made in the 1930's. (close up photo # 3 shows the Kyoto city name) It was used for weighing gold, tobacco and make up. This is a complete scale with the original balance weight and storage case. It's made of metal, we think nickel. Silver colored but not magnetic. We've included an article from "Daruma" magazine about these weights. (Last photos) Daruma Magazine is an English language magazine based in the Kansai area of Japan and focuses exclusively on Japanese antiques. To use this, there are two pivot points the user can hold. Each pivot point has a different weight reading. (photo #1 and 7 show the different pivot points being held.) Each pivot point has it's own measuring guide on the side of the bar that can be read. The items to be used would be put in the pan and when the balancing weight was moved on the bar to where it balanced by holding just the pivot point, the reading would be taken from where the weight was resting on the bar. These were very accurate and were checked by the Japanese government for accuracy. The kanji on the weight (close up photo # 5) states this is an accurate weight. Please read the accompanying article in the last photos about these scales. This is a complete scale in perfect seemingly unused condition.
