The carving shows a lion stepping forward with his mouth open and showing his canine teeth. The lion has his two right legs moving forward while his two left legs are still in the back position suggesting forward movement. Hs mouth is open and you can see his four canine teeth suggesting the lion is growling. The carving is very well done and shows the details of the Lion's face, eyes, mouth, nose, mane, tail, head and rib cage in the middle of his body. The carving appears to have a brown color and shows the grain of the wood on the lion's back. It would seem the color is original to the wood used for the carving. The piece is extremely well done by what we would categorize as an accomplished carver. This nice size carving (~7 1/4" long) shows a great deal of details which indicates the ability of the carver to work on miniatures with great accuracy. The carving is unmarked as to the artist or its origin. This is a wonderful and extremely well-done piece of folk art carving to add to your Collection. The lion is lightly soiled when looking at the carved lines simulating his mane and also in the inside of the mouth as well as the crevasses in the head.
