Description: Vintage Guatemalan Huipil, from Tecpan, a town east of Lake Atitlan. The Huipil is petite size, opening for head approx. 7.5 inches (20 cm). Measures 24" (61 cm) shoulder to hem and 27" (69 cm) side to side. The embroidered decorative motif extends 15,5 inches (approx. 40 cm) from shoulder to a 9" (23 cm) border. The base fabric is a deep blue cotton, and the huipil is made from 2 panels, approx. 48" x 13.5" (120 cm x 34 cm). Arm holes are approx. 3.5 in (9 cm). The indigenous peoples from Tecpan are Kaqchikel Mayan. The diamond designs in the embroidery represent the cardinal directions with the path of the sun surrounding ("Living Maya" by Walter Morris, 1994), and birds represent chickens.
