Vintage 1940s EXCELLENT NWD Stephen Stetson Whippet Beaver 10 Size 6-3/4

Description: This EXCELLENT Vintage 1940s Stephen L. Stetson - Whippet Style - the color is Gray with a Brown tint to it, read below - the picture of the whole underside is the best match for the actual color of this great hat - Beaver Ten. Size 6-3/4. Even the coat trolley string is still fully functional on this hat! The Stephen Stetson hat box is NOT included in this sale. The hat box has a badly broken bottom and back of it is badly torn so my son is going to try and fix it up but it’s not worth the cost of shipping. This is an outstanding wide (2.75 inches) brim and that wide bound brim edge is an exact duplicate of the Stetson Whippet. The hat appears unworn. We are pretty darn certain that this was worn, it’s just to beautiful to have never been worn before! You can see the leather sweatband had no wear on it! Even the reed is perfect! The Reed is what attaches the leather sweatband to the hat. That top edge of the leather sweatband. Well if he had not tried to stretch it would be pristine. The bound brim edge and the grosgrain ribbon are completely secured to the hat and are very clean and completely secured to the hat. As is that Beautiful hat liner! You can see that this was manufactured POST John B Stetson versus Stephen L. Stetson battle in the courts! John Stetson won this battle in 1936 Stephen had printed this on their liners, it was now referring back to “NOT CONNECTED IN ANY WAY WITH John B. Stetson” see liner picture. The Olympic Brand was used during the time the law suit hat already started. This original 1940s Stephen L. Stetson Beaver Ten is Very very soft and pliable, hold a shape just like you’d expect from these true vintage beaver hat. This was steam shaped into that beautiful Pinched Crown with a perfect dip in the front. The front brim can easily be turned up if you wanted and if you’d rather have it shaped that way you can write to ask us and we will do that for you. We took out Dads 1950s Stetson Beaver hats: 3X, Ten, Fifteen and Twenty and this is a perfect match for the Beaver Ten. This is not one of Dad’s hats but actually belongs to his Great Grandson, it was to small so without any help or guidance he tried stretching this hat. It was one that he worked on himself. As you can see he did NOT prepare the leather at all for stretching. Dad always applied Glove Oil twice before stretching a hat. He applies the Glove Oil, allows it to absorb and repeats this process before stretching a hat. This is really about the only thing we can see that is wrong with the hat. Dad showed him how to fix the leather sweatband so that with that small patch from another stetson leather sweatband was cut to fit and then Welwood Glue was used to secure it. It is now the strongest part of the leather sweatband. No one but you will know it’s there. We also so that tiny spot on the back brim. It’s super tiny and could most likely get cleaned up much better. One of Dads hat collector buyers writes to tell Dad to use one of those Orange Cleaning Sponges but after nearly 50 years Dad say he will not change his ways of working hats. We measured this twice to verify it’s true size. We use the Tilley hat size chart. This chart is still in use today. This is another time where Dad and I are disagreeing on the hat color! Dad says it is vintage gray with a hint of brown in it. One collector is writing to tell us it’s a brown gray color? We just can’t nail this one down but you are buying what you see in the picture of the whole underside. So NO returns because you don’t like the color please.If you wanted to get this stretched to s a size 6-7/8 you’ll need to take this to a hatter to do that work. We don’t believe that can be stretched at home.
