Description: Vietnam War Era (1967-1968, 1972-73, 1976 Contracts) US Army M1 MILPAR COL Garand Rifle M5A1 Knife Bayonet & Scabbard We are inexperienced in proper cleaning techniques for vintage knives so we are leaving any polishing, cleaning, oiling, sharpening and/or other maintenance up to the new owner. Please see photos for condition as there may be: missing paint, rust, oxidation, discolorations, etc. There is a small crack near the eyelet at the top of the scabbard. To the untrained eye, this set appears to be in generally good vintage condition without nicks to the blade and a sharp point to the tip of the blade. The scabbard functions, as intended. This is not our usual areas of expertise so if there are specific questions that you may have, please ask and we will be happy to provide more specific photos and/or measurements Manufacturer:Columbia MilparModel:M5A1Blade Length: 6 1/2" The top of the guard is marked "U.S. M5A1 / MILPAR COL". The sheath is marked "U.S.M8A1 / PWH". found info that may be relevant: Vietnam War era M1 Garand self loading rifle Imperial M5A1 knife bayonet and M8A1 scabbard. After WWII, the U.S. Army wanted to develop a smaller better bayonet for their M1 Garands. They wanted something less expensive, easy to make, but still functional. The M5A1 was approved 1956. There were several manufacturers that made the bayonet, Imperial Knife, Aerial Cutlery, Columbia Milpar, J&D Tool and Utica Cutlery. Germany and Korea also made bayonets for the United States.
