Size: 18.5mm diameter, 3.15g weight Composition: Silver Trajan was the first emperor who was not born in Italy, and his ascent to the throne marked a shift in Roman politics towards greater emphasis on military success and expansion. He was a successful general who served in the Roman legions in Germany, Britain, and the Middle East. As emperor, Trajan pursued an aggressive policy of territorial expansion, which saw the Roman Empire reach its greatest size thus far. He conquered the kingdom of Dacia in modern-day Romania and extended Roman control over much of the Middle East. Trajan was also known for his public works projects and his efforts to improve the infrastructure of the Roman Empire. He oversaw the construction of new roads, aqueducts, and public buildings, including Trajan's Column in Rome, which still stands today. Trajan was also a patron of the arts and culture. He supported writers and poets, and was known for his love of Greek philosophy. Trajan died in 117 AD of illness, while on campaign in the Middle East. He was succeeded by his adopted son, Hadrian, who continued many of Trajan's policies and achievements. He is remembered as one of the greatest Roman emperors, and his reign is often seen as a period of great stability, prosperity, and cultural achievement in Roman history.
