Description: CONDITIONSealed, never been opened/played. ABOUT THE GAMEThe Resistance: Avalon pits the forces of Good and Evil in a battle to control the future of civilization. Arthur represents the future of Britain, a promise of prosperity and honor, yet hidden among his brave warriors are Mordred's unscrupulous minions. These forces of evil are few in number but have knowledge of each other and remain hidden from all but one of Arthur's servants. Merlin alone knows the agents of evil, but he must speak of this only in riddles. If his true identity is discovered, all will be lost. The Resistance: Avalon is a standalone game, and while The Resistance is not required to play, the games are compatible and can be combined. POPULAR REVIEW FROM AGENT EMMEMy review, after some plays at Gen Con 2012 and some plays at home:Part 1: What's in the box?Theme: The theme of Avalon is obviously centered around King Arthur: The mission cards relate to the Quest for the Holy Grail, Spies are now Minions of Mordred, and members of the Resistance are now Loyal Servants of Arthur. For gamers who appreciate it when a game fits the theme, I think you will be satisfied with Avalon. It's a fun change from the sci-fi theme of the original game and provides many opportunities to speak with a Monty Python accent.Components: You do not need to own The Resistance in order to play Avalon. All components needed to play Avalon are included in the Avalon box.The box is larger than the 1st print edition of The Resistance (I refer to the small black box), which is a negative in my opinion because the small box was oh-so-easy to fit in backpacks and carryons. But one cannot live in the past; the Avalon box is the same size as the 2nd print edition of The Resistance (the medium-sized red box). The Avalon box seems a little too shallow to accommodate all game components plus sleeves and promos unless maybe you take out the box insert.(Photo credit: 1awesomeguy)The reason for this increase in size is most likely due to the player mats: There are 3 lovely illustrated though a little flimsy double-sided mats that clearly convey how many knights must go on each round's quest, plus a handy tracker to keep track of the votes (remember, 5 no's in a row and the Minions of Mordred win!)(Photo credit: mdanuser)I personally am not a fan of the new voting tokens, which replace voting cards, because they are small and people mess around with them, increasing the potential to tear the edges of a piece you can't sleeve, but the tokens do reduce those "Oops, I grabbed someone's role card instead of my voting cards, so we have to start the game over" mistakes.Efforts have been made to make the game color-blind friendly, though I have seen issues with players confusing the "pass" chalice with the "fail" chalice. These players probably would have an easier time if they noticed that the "pass" chalice has 2 gem-burst symbols and the "fail" chalice only has 1.Yes, there are typos on some cards and the rulebook. These have been discussed to death in other threads. They do not prevent players from actually playing the game.Part 2: The game itselfI'm not going to cover the rules of The Resistance here, as they are well-documented in other reviews. I'm just going to cover Avalon.Win conditions:The Loyal Servants of Arthur win the game if they take best out of 5 quests AND Merlin is not assassinated. The Minions of Mordred win the game if they take best out of 5 missions OR if the Assassin kills Merlin after the Loyal Servants of Arthur take best out of 5 quests.Avalon-Specific Rules:Basically, it's like roles were added to The Resistance. It's a nearly universal truth that everyone likes to be a role holder. It's exciting to have that extra insight, power, and responsibility!Role rundown:Merlin - Knows through a distinct nonverbal signal who at the table is a Loyal Servant of Arthur and who is a Minion of Mordred, with the exception of Mordred himself. Cannot be too obvious with this information because the Assassin can kill himAssassin - If the Loyal Servants of Arthur win best out of 5 rounds, the Assassin guesses which player at the table is Merlin. If he/she guesses correctly, the Minions of Mordred winMordred - Does not perform the distinct nonverbal signal with the other Minions. Thus he does not reveal himself to Merlin (hidden traitor)Percival - Knows through a distinct nonverbal signal who is Merlin (or narrows it down, depending on if Morgana is in the game). Thus, Percival has inside information as well and can help throw the Assassin off-courseMorgana - During the pre-game phase when Merlin is told to reveal himself to Percival, Morgana gives the same nonverbal signal as Merlin. Thus Percival does not know which player is the true Merlin, but has it narrowed down to 2 players.Oberon - Does not open his eyes to see his fellow Minions of Mordred during the pre-game phaseLancelot - I don't know, as I don't have the Essen/Kickstarter promo cards and have not seen the rules for this variant - but it looks fun!Excalibur - I don't know, as I don't have the Essen/Kickstarter promo cardsLady of the Lake - This is actually a token of some sort, not a role, but I haven't played with it and don't know too much about it.Part 3: My opinionThe original Resistance is complicated and complex enough that each game feels unique. I don't think Avalon tries to fix anything from the original game; it's a fun variant that stands on its own. And I am definitely a fan of this variant. I have played a couple of times by now - twice as Merlin - and each game was totally different. Like I said before, roles are exciting. I felt supercharged both times I received the Merlin role (lost the first time, won the second).I also like that Avalon adds a whole new circle of topics to Resistance conversations and look forward to years of trading strategies, stories, and ideas with other players on how to tackle the new roles. My one concern: I haven't played in a 10-player version yet though, and I imagine that 4 Minions with roles that water down the power of Merlin and Percival's roles might be a little overwhelming.Still, I would absolutely recommend Avalon. I would play it any time. I think it’s a great strategic game while also being a great party game. Outspoken people will love it. Deduction/logic fans will love it. Groups of friends will love it. Gamer families will love it.Notes: Because of its traitor/saboteur nature I would not recommend it to people looking for a light or friendly game. I would not recommend it to young kids because they will have issues with lying, especially if their parents are playing. I would not recommend it to notoriously shy gamers.
