Description: THE LIFE OF CHRIST IN TWO VOLUMES. Volume One is subtitled "The Word Was Made Flesh". Volume Two is subtitled "The Scales on the Mountain". Italian text by Agostino Turla. English text by Dino Nardi. Original aquafortis etchings by Mario Pagliardini. Raggio Publishing Company, 1955. Two large softcovers in a red box, both unpaginated. This box set is dated 1955, but the individual books were published in 1947 and 1952. Number 81 of a LIMITED EDITION of 501 sets, with both volumes SIGNED by the authors and artist on the colophon page. Good condition only. Issues common to both volumes: There's some waviness to the glassine dust jackets and moderate edge-wear to the covers. There's sporadic foxing and dust-soiling to the pages. The binding is showing some splitting between some pages and in the hinges, with a few pages starting to loosen. But nothing has detached, and the the overall bindings are generally still firm. There's some waviness and rippling to the pages, especially in Volume Two, but it does not appear to be caused by any water staining, etc. Each volume has a somewhat worn marker ribbon. Volume One has light pencil scribbles (partly erased) on the front endpaper. Laid-in to each volume is a signed "Certificate of guaranty", an insert about the artist, and an insert regarding the copy of this work given to the Pope. One of the "Certificates" has creasing along one edge. Both of the volumes share a narrow, wrap-around paper jacket, which was apparently torn when first opened. The red box, which folds open and has two "snaps" for snapping shut, has soiling, rubbing, and heavy edge-wear of chips, scuffs, etc. There are some scribbles on the front of the box. There's an attached ribbon on the inside of the box. A scarce and beautifully illustrated work.
