Description: We are not sure about the impression because it is not listed, however we believe it is likely the 9th impression of the 1st American because: The Fellowship of the Ring 1/9 was the first Houghton Mifflin impression to have a joint George Allen &Unwin/Houghton Mifflin title-page, and is the only Purnell impression with the correct reading on p. 414/28 where ‘honr’ was corrected to “hour’. The ninth is also the only FR seen that has a joint A8U/HM title-page without also having the Allen & Unwin printing history on the title verso." Purnell impressions were the ones that stated "PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN" (all caps) on the title verso (the same statement on the impressions printed by Jarrold & sons was in italics). That said, other opinions say it may be a 10th impression. We are not certain which it is. Crack to the hinge on front cover, including a small rip at the top. Some stains on the cover and binding. Foxing. Old books come with wear commensurate to age, including, potentially, age stains, chipping, rubbing, edge wear, dings, fraying, stray marks, minor old book odor, and the like. What you see is what you get :)
