Description: This 1850 edition of the Anglican Church's Book of Common Prayer utilized some of the best printing techniques of the Victorian era. The publisher turned the book into a Victorian, printed version of a Medieval Book of Hours, and relied on the most creative designer of the times to contribute substantially to the book. Every page is printed with an elaborate, chromolithographed decorative border, color coded for the different sections of the book. There are full page illustrations throughout, some featuring four-color schemes with gilding. "All Vignettes, Initials, Borders, and Ornaments" are attributed to Owen Jones, Architect. Owen Jones is considered today one of the most important and influential illustrators of the Victorian era. He invented a new form of interior decoration, based on Arabic and Oriental motifs, completely unlike Classical designs, and that is recognized today as definitively Victorian. He was entrusted with the interior decoration of the Crystal Palace, and many notable 19th century structures, but his creativity lent itself to more than just architecture. He was an inventor of the chromolithographic printing process, and he designed wallpaper, fabrics, and both the Chinese and Oriental rooms at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Six years after the publication of this Book of Common Prayer, Owen Jones published his most seminal work, The Grammar of Ornament, intending to give students the basic tools to create their own unique designs. The Grammar of Ornament has never been out of print and is influential in our times. The book on offer here has an owner's dedication to his mother dated Christmas Day, 1858. This would have been a very expensive gift in its day. It would also have been a daring purchase, as it featured the design work of a pioneering artist in Owen Jones. Because of his contribution, this Book of Common Prayer remains prized by collectors as a masterpiece of Victorian arts and craftsmanship.
