Published by Oriental Research Partners. ISBN 0-89250-217-7 ISBN 0-89250-218-5 Volume I Extensive notes and annotations by Prof. Peter Brown, Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. Kahan's published and unpublished works on East European and Soviet economic problems/policies while he was at the University of Chicago. "Clearly a work that 'reads well' and indeed deserves to be read and re-read by those examining the issues that Kahan addressed." [Russian Review, vol. 52, #3, p. 435.] "Valuable collection. The work retains its capacity to shock the reader by making arresting comparisons with other societies. Kahan observed that the average American workers in 1900 had completed 7.7 years of schooling, a figure not reached in the Soviet Union until the 1970s." [P. Gatrell, Slavic Review,1994]. Volume II Volume II of a two-volume set. 265 pp. In English. Arcadius Kahan (January 16, 1920 - 1982) was a20th-Century economic historian and professor at the University of Chicago. Arcadius was author of Russian Economic History, The Nineteenth Century as well as The Plow, the Hammer, and the Knout. The latter book presents his explanation of the foundation in the Eighteenth Century of the Russian economy and power structure. After escaping from war-torn Europe, he joined the Economics faculty at the University of Chicago in 1955. There, he won the confidence of Milton Friedman with his work on the economic effects of the persecution of Jews in 19th century Russia. Kahan concluded that this had a significant impact on Russia's economic backwardness, particularly as compared with Western Europe. He argued that this was an example of dysfunctional governmental interference in the economy, which drew on the methodology of the neoliberals in the Chicago school.
