Description: Soviet Russian USSR WWII medal Order of the Red Star with serial number in the 1.9-2 million range awarded in 1945 to Michman Severyan Kanashev, chief NCO for the floatplane catapult on the Cruiser Voroshilov, Black Sea Fleet. An extremely rare award to a serviceman involved in floatplane operations on one of the Soviet navy’s capital ships. Kanashev had previously been awarded the Bravery medal in late 1942/early 1943 for the events of December 1, 1942, when the ship hit a mine, and he repaired a 37 mm gun that had been damaged. Kanashev previously served on the Battleship Sevastopol as a torpedo specialist and on the Cruiser Krasny Kavkaz as that ship’s catapult NCO. A description of the catapult specialist’s work in Russian: “Старт производится старшиной катапульты или техником самолета. После того как самолет был установлен на стартовые салазки и подготовлен к старту, летчик включал специальную сигнальную лампу, размещенную под левым крылом. Затем запускался двигатель, и после его прогрева следовало предупреждение о готовности к старту. Получив утвердительный ответ от старшины катапульты, летчик давал полный газ двигателю, устанавливал ручку управления самолетом в нейтральное положение, затылком упирался в заголовник кабины и выключал сигнальную лампу – это был сигнал о готовности стартовать. Немедленно после этого старшина катапульты давал своему помощнику команду открыть вентиль подачи сжатого воздуха и нажимал рычаг старта. После отделения от катапульты летчик производил набор высоты в соответствии с летной инструкцией.” Condition is excellent, as seen in the images!
