Description: This a rare paper flag which was probably one of those little flags someone would have waved in Moscow when Regan's autocade was enroute to meet with Gorbachev for the Moscow Summit held May 29 - June 3 in 1988. It has an interesting history tied to it. The Soviet Peace Committee was an internal/state-sponsored USSR organization founded in 1949 who was responsible for coordinating peace movements in the Soviet Union and was a member of the World Peace Council. The Soviet Committee didn't trust independent peace organizations operating within the USSR so this was a state-sponsored organization which only started to see some independence during the period, when this flag was made, through 1985-1991. In its years before, it was often viewed as a KGB front. The 1988 Moscow Summit wasn't an instance of groundbreaking peace relations between the US and USSR but it was often viewed that any agreement to discuss a peaceful arrangements was, in-itself, successful; especially in this particularly tense part of the Cold War with regards to the intensified arms race. Condition - It has some light, but still noticeable, stains (maybe even stains from that very day) and it was likely much whiter at the time it was made. However, it should be respected for being without tears or creases. This is an odd shape to store away and most, that would've existed to this day probably would have been folded, torn and outright tossed away. It is only paper and that wood piece is thin balsa-like - something most likely to break. Plus, it made a long trip from Moscow. The flag is approx. 10" x 5" and the stick is 10" long - both sides display the same image. The date was written on the handle by the previous owner.
