Song Dynasty Chinese Scholar and Pine Tree Painting

Description: Ancient scholars were government officials and prestigious (important and admired) persons in Chinese society, forming a distinct social class. Many scholars were also specialists of important teachings, calligraphy, and artists. This Song Dynasty Chinese watercolor painting is of a scholar resting up against the bent trunk of a pine tree with a landscape background. The painting is in the style of Han Huang (723-789), an 8th century Chinese painter whose famous painting of "Chinese Scholars in the Garden of Literature" is very similar to this painting of a scholar leaning on a tree. Although Han Huang is best known for his paintings of animals, he also excelled in painting portraits of his close friends and officials. This ancient watercolor painting appears to be from Han Huang during the Chinese Song Dynasty. There is a red seal in the lower left side of the painting that could be of the artist, reign period, or for whom the painting was about or given to. The watercolor painting is mounted to the damask border. The painting is approximately 8.2 in X 5.6 in or 20.8 cm X 14.4 cm. The painting mounted with the damask border approximately measures 10.4 in X 7.8 in or 26.4 cm X 19.9 cm. Painting Details: The scholar's robe is teal (green) and red in color. A belt with perhaps a white jade belt buckle is shown under the bent trunk of the tree. His arms and hands rest within his robe. You are drawn to his white face with arched eyebrows looking at the surrounding landscape. His prominent nose, large ears, downward mustache, and small beard are captivating. The white face is probably symbolic; perhaps highlighting his important and admired status in Chinese society. There is a dark hat that sits on top of his head. A magnificent old pine tree with shades of brown and weathered tree trunk has branches with green pine needles. The landscape background is comprised of shrubs, hillside, and the magnificent old pine tree. The watercolors, some surface staining, and scuff marks are commensurate with other Song Dynasty paintings. The unframed pictures are true to color.
