One page, quarto. December 8, 1924. To D.J. MacDonald, a civil servant that Churchill had a long correspondence with over the years. Churchill writes: "Many thanks for your letter. I read the enclosed scheme you sent with great interest and have been carefully examining it. Yours Sincerely, Winston S. Churchill". Churchill became Chancellor on November 6, 1924. Churchill formally rejoined the Conservative Party at that time. As Chancellor, he intended to pursue his free trade principles in the form of laissez-faire economics, as under the previous Liberal social reforms. In April 1925, he controversially, albeit somewhat reluctantly, restored the gold standard in his first budget, against the advice of some leading economists. The result was massive deflation, along with the decline of the coal industry in the U.K. Churchill on reflection, called this one of the greatest mistakes of his political career.
