Description: Schumann Bavaria Cup Saucer Demitasse E&R Importer Empress Dresdner Flowers 1960 Exquisite Decorative DEMITASSE Flat CUP & SAUCER from Schumann in Arzberg, Bavaria, Hand Painted EMPRESS DRESDNER FLOWERS Design on HIGH WHITE PORCELAIN w/GOLD Trim, EMBOSSED SCALLOPED Rim on Saucer & SMOOTH RIM on Cup, circa 1960 DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted set was produced with beautiful Dresdner Flowers on the high white porcelain with gold trim on the scalloped, embossed rims. The design looks so classic. The gold cartouches really draw your attention to the beautiful flowers. The leaves and stems are outlined in gold. This makes a beautiful display set or can be used everyday. The color palette used is: pink, orange, green, purple, blue on white w/gold. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks. There is no wear to the gold or paint. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The deep saucer has a diameter of 4 1/8" and a height of 3/4". The demitasse flat cup has a diameter of 2 1/8" and a height of 2 1/4" while the capacity is 2 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: The factory was founded in 1881 by Christian Heinrich Schumann in Arzberg, Bavaria after being forced to close his previous pottery (founded 1876) due to the development of a rail road through the factory. Upon his death, the pottery was run by his widow until his youngest son, Carl Schumann I, married in 1896 and assumed management. The company was incorporated in July of 1923. In 1926, Carl’s son, who had been studying in America, assumed leadership after his father’s untimely death at 55. After WWII, the pottery flourished, but never regained its prior success as Japanese products flooded the American & European markets. The business stayed in the family until it was closed in 1994. The mark on this set is identified by the website PM&M (porcelainmarksandmore) as mark #4-42 which was used in the 1960-1970 time period. Located in Devon & then Allentown, Pennsylvannia, Ebeling & Reuss operated from 1866-2002. Owned by the Ebeling and Reuss families, they were major importers & distributors of Germain, Austrian and Bohemian porcelain from Furstenberg, W. Goebel, Heinrich & Co., Jaeger & Co. and Carl Schumann. The importer, Ebeling & Reuss (E & R), mark was used 1950-1960 as cited in porcelainmarksandmore.com as mark #1-26.
