Richard J S GUTMAN / John Wilkes Booth Himself / Original Signed 1st ed 1979

Description: John Wilkes Booth Himself / Original Carte-de-Visite Author: GUTMAN, Richard J.S., and GUTMAN, Kellie O. Title: John Wilkes Booth Himself / Original Carte-de-Visite Publication: Dover, MA: Hired Hand Press, 1979 Description: Hardcover. Wide 8vo. Light brown cloth with gilt lettering and gilt-bordered sepia-tone plate to front board, pictorial dust jacket. 87pp. Numerous illustrations. Fine/very good. Faint jacket edgewear only. Tight and bright first and only edition of this definitive, well-illustrated survey of John Wilkes Booth imagery, with informative text discussing the history of cartes-de-visite and the circumstances behind each Booth portrait. Colophon at rear notes limitation of 1,000 numbered copies (this #46) boldly signed in full by both authors. Fairly scarce -- and this sharp copy is accompanied by an original Booth carte-de-visite, 2 3/8" X 4", n.p., n.y. Very good. Mild age toning and miniscule chip at upper right and lower left corners (likely from earlier mounting). No backstamp and likely one of the many pirated images that surfaced shortly after the assassination. A sharp, attractive copy of this well-known three-quarters length standing pose taken around 1863 by photographer C.D. Fredericks of New York, depicting Booth facing the viewer's right with left arm on hip and right arm posed jauntily across his chest -- image #29 according to Gutman's numbering. A nice example.
