Description: Richard I "the Lionheart", silver denier of Aquitaine, c. 1189-99 AD, reads RICA/RDV/S and AQVITAIIIE. The dies for this coin are both extraordinarily blunderd, even for this crude issue. On the obverse, the engraver failed to make enough space for the S of the legend, so a small S has been engraved directly into the die underneath the V. On the reverse, I punches have been used to make the N of the legend. An interesting, apparently unpublished coin, worthy of further research. about VF, bright metal, a little ragged. Extremely rare. Apparently unpublished but cf. Elias 4 for general type.
