The .30-06 cartridge, first developed in 1906, was the official U.S. rifle and light machine gun cartridge in both World Wars and Korea, with combat use finally ending in the 1960s. The huge quantities of ammunition required for World War II dramatically reflected the impact on warfare of rapid-fire weapons like the machine gun and semi-automatic rifle. Total small arms ammunition production from 1940-1945 exceeded 41.7 billion rounds, and of that total the Caliber .30 round accounted for 25 billion rounds in all loadings. During the 1930s Frankford was the only plant in the U.S. producing military small arms ammunition. Beginning in 1939, small orders were placed with Remington Arms and Western Cartridge for military cartridges, paving the way for future expansion. During the critical period from late 1941 to early 1942, this company and Frankford Arsenal produced most of the small arms ammunition for the U.S. armed forces. Then, as the new ordnance plants started coming on line in 1942, Remington was the operating entity/contractor for the Denver, Kings Mills, Lake City, Lowell, and Utah Ordnance Plants.
