Description: A very unusual cover from the Reconstruction-era, featuring a well-centered 2cent brown Rider from the 1869 issue and sent by the US Internal Revenue office in Madison GA. The addressee is incorrectly written as A H Stevens (Stephens) in Crawfordville. The docketing on the reverse indicates: C. Smith Madison Geo May 19th 1870 Notice to pay Revenue Tax. There is some discoloration around the edges and some soiling. A number of hash marks were written on the lower left front (adding up taxes due?). No one wants to receive one of these letters, unless addressed to someone else.
