Moderate to heavy soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with splits along the exterior joints, especially the rear joint, which is cracked nearly the entire length of the spine and appears to have been glued. Bumping to tips and chipping to spine cap. Lacking the first two leaves (four pages), including the first title page, but otherwise appears complete. 1830 ink prior owner inscription and later pencil notation to blank front free-endpaper. Ink stain to first page of text and at least two other pages, partially obscuring some text. Cracking at the gutter between the first page of Genesis, with a bit of tearing to the inside part of these pages. Likewise, considerable cracking at the gutter and some chipping to pages 183 of the second work (New Testament), with these last pages only attached to the text block at the top. Despite all these detractions, still an excellent reading/reference copy of this exceptionally rare American issue of this English translation of the Polyglot Bible, complete apart from the first title page. We located only two copies via OCLC - one at Columbia University in New York and an imperfect copy (lacking pages 188 of the second work) at Drew University in New Jersey. This English translation of the Polygot Bible is divided into two, separately paginated books, each of which uses double page numbers to present a page of notes across each page of text. The volume consists of two separately paginated sections: An edition of the English translation of the Polyglot Bible Old Testament (585 double numbered pages); and the New Testament (188 double numbered pages). The title page for the NT reads: The New Testament, Having an Extensive Selection of Appropriate References; Both Parallel and Illustrative, from Canne, Browne, Blayney, and Scott, and the Latin Vulgate, the French, and German Bibles. About the Polyglot Bible: The polyglot Bible was the result of Spain's long-lasting tradition of translations of texts. Through centuries the intellectual class of the Iberian peninsula had developed a deep understanding of the issues of translation and the difficulty of conveying, or even interpreting meaning correctly across languages. Religious texts were known to be particularly difficult due to their high metaphorical content and how dependent on the context in which they were written they tended to be. This sparked a debate in Spain about the convenience of continuing the translation of religious texts, and the best way to do it, over a century prior to the Reformation. The customary answer to this debate was to ask religious authorities to examine the translation and cross-check and compare different translations with contemporary Castilian, but that in turn created a debate about the qualifications of the religious authority itself to properly translate from the original sources. One of the answers to this debate was the Polyglot Bible, which Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros (1436–1517) hoped would end the issue forever. It includes the first printed editions of the Greek New Testament, the complete Septuagint, and the Targum Onkelos, a translation of the Torah.
