Description: - VERY RARE “Handel Lamp Company” STOCK CERTIFICATE -- ONLY 48 Handel Stocks in TOTAL were ever “FULLY ISSUED” -- Personal OWNERSHIP Shares of SECRETARY Wm F. Hirschfeld - This is one of ONLY four stock certificates I have for sale signed by William F. Handel. VERY RARE, fully-issued STOCK CERTIFICATE # 52 in “THE HANDEL COMPANY”, the Meriden, Connecticut manufacturer of some of America’s most sought after and expensive ANTIQUE LAMPS. The stock certificate is dated March 8th 1934, just 2 years before ALL manufacturing had ceased in this historic company. The stock was issued to William F. Hirschfeld, the SECRETARY of “The Handel Company”, in the amount of 50 shares. Along the bottom of the stock, BOTH William F. Handel (as PRESIDENT) and William F. Hirschfeld (as SECRETARY) have genuinely SIGNED their names as OFFICERS of the company. Company founder Philip J. Handel died in 1914, and his cousin William F. Handel took over in 1919, assuming control of the company from Philip Handel’s wife Fannie. The BACKSIDE of the stock is partly-printed and is SIGNED a second time by William F. Hirschfeld on May 9th 1934. To the left of Hirschfeld’s signature, “Alice Hill” has SIGNED her name as a “witness”. The certificate has an embossed corporate seal in the lower left corner of the stock, indicating the company was incorporated in 1903. There are NO cancellation marks on the stock. The TOTAL capital stock of “The Handel Company” amounted to ONLY $50,000, and it was a very closely held company. There were ONLY 48 stock certificates in TOTAL issued in this company, and this was the very LAST stock ever issued by the company. Stock certificates numbered 53 and greater were all “blank” and never issued. FOUR of the stocks numbered 1 – 52 were “voided”, as they were partially filled in and never issued. The stunning leaded glass and reverse painted SHADES manufactured by the HANDEL LAMP company have always been prized by collectors of EARLY American lamps – recognized for their exceptional beauty and craftsmanship. This very special stock certificate would frame up and display handsomely on a wall behind an exquisite HANDEL lamp, creating a one of a kind display. HANDEL LAMP COMPANY - in 1885, Philip Handel joined in partnership with Adolph Eydam to form the “Eydam and Handel Company” in Meriden, Connecticut. When this partnership dissolved in 1892, the company was relocated to larger facilities and was initially known as “Philip J. Handel” and thereafter as “Handel and Company”. ”The Handel Company” originally incorporated on June 11, 1903 with Philip J. Handel, Albert Parlow, and Antone Teich as the primary officers. Philip J. Handel married his second wife, Fannie Hirschfield Handel, in 1906, and she became company President upon Philip Handel’s death in 1914. Fannie Handel Turner remarried in 1918 and managerial control of the company soon passed to Philip Handel’s cousin, William F. Handel, . The immediate post World War I period was one of tremendous growth and profitability for The Handel Company. However, the economic slowdown of the late 1920’s and resulting Great Depression had a devastating effect on company fortunes. By 1929, most production had ceased; and manufacturing ended all together in 1936. Condition: stock certificate is guaranteed authentic (NOT a copy). It measures about 8 ¼ x 10 7/8 inches in size and is in EXCELLENT, near mint condition. There are NO folds, rips or tears (see scans). The signatures / autographs of William F. Handel and William F. Hirschfeld are guaranteed authentic. Winning bidder to pay $10 for shipping, postage & INSURANCE. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. PLEASE READ: I have been buying + selling American historical autographs & documents for over 40 years and a former member of both the “Manuscript Society” and the UACC. We ship everything INSURED (thru the USPS) with a value over $50. This helps us know that the item you took the time to purchase arrived safely. Packages are shipped out within 1 – 3 business days, but typically the next day. Please understand, we do not make any money on shipping costs, but rather run a deficit over the course of a year. Most buyers don’t realize that ebay charges me a 13.3 percent FEE on the item sold, an additional 13.3 percent FEE on my quoted shipping charges, and another 13.3 percent FEE on the sales tax that ebay collects on the item. Everything we sell is packaged with the utmost care. Please read my ebay feedback over the last 25 years. The comments are often – the best packaging I have ever seen or “bullet proof” packaging. We do NOT offer returns for one simple reason. In the past, I have had some buyers purchase items from me and then proceed to shop them around during the return period to try and make a fast profit, without any financial risk. After they were unsuccessful, they returned the item to me. This information, however, made it back to me from different people I know who were directly offered my item immediately after I had sold it and before it was returned to me for a refund. Bid with confidence! You will receive the exact item pictured and in the same condition as described in my listing.
