Description: This piece has remnants of a paper label identifying its manufacture by the historic Larkin Company. The Larkin Company, whose first traveling salesman was Elbert Hubbard (who later founded Roycroft) began life as a soap manufacturer and was one of the first companies to offer "premiums" with mail orders, including Morris chairs and Chataqua desks (!). This is the first stool of its kind I've seen signed with a paper label that unmistakably identifies it as American made by a solid US company with a direct link to Elbert Hubbard, Roycroft, the Arts and Crafts era, and Frank Lloyd Wright (who designed the Larkin Company Administration Building). This stool is an All-American Arts and Crafts inspired interpretation of the Liberty Thebes stool. This may be the first of its kind to be positively identified as AMERICAN MADE! This Thebes stool is 14" tall with a square concave seat measuring 17" x 17". Angled spindles support the seat and the legs are ring turned. This stool is a classic Egyptian Revival piece, circa 1900, similar in style to those from Liberty company of London. It is very sturdy and is surprisingly comfortable to sit on, especially with a supplemental cushion on the seat (shown but not included). Condition is commensurate with age. There are a few small losses on the inside of the legs and the feet which do not detract from its appearance. The seat has been cleaned, probably in an attempt to remove the stain seen in the pictures. Legs and spindles have been reglued, probably long ago.
