Description: Stunning little jewel of a box, this one dates latest 18th century, perhaps into earliest 19th century, French Empire at latest. It is entirely trimmed out in 18k gold (acid tested) and the box is octagonal form, canted corners, is entirely veneered in elegant mother of pearl. Petit, I believe it was originally the etui or case for a splendid 18k sewing tools set. On its own, it is a spectacular work of art. Double snake hinged upper handles and ornamented sides with ring handles, hinge and clasp and bun feet are all 18k gold. This would have been originally offered through the boutiques of the famed Palais Royal, Paris - palace of Cardinal Richelieu. Full measurements noted on the photos. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, it remains museum-worthy, no missing panels of mother of pearl veneer, and no large chips. Tight thin hairline on the back panel having to do with the drill for the hinge pin, marked on our photos. As you can see, the interior lining or fittings are no longer intact. As noted, I believe it would have originally been a sewing etui with 18k gold sewing implements, tools, scissors etc., but the interior has been lost to time. Over 200 years in age, remarkable little gem.
