Soon to be a major new film. As America gasps in the stranglehold of a skull-crushing totalitarian regime, a supernatural intelligence speaks from the stars…ARAMCHEK… the word scratched in the sidewalk of the Presidents childhood home.ARAMCHEK… the name of the subversive society with no official membership whose sole purpose is to overthrow the American government.ARAMCHEK… the word printed on a book which contains the Presidents signature – a book in the hands of a Communist Party organiser.ARAMCHEK… the name of a woman who may hold the key – and who has only weeks to live. Will the agents of the omniscient Valis succeed in their mission of liberation? Or will the seek-and-destroy tactics of President Ferris F. Freemont extend the mind-numbing grip of the Antagonist across the parameters of the free world? In Radio Free Albemuth, his last novel, Philip K. Dick morphed and recombined themes that had informed his fiction from A Scanner Darkly to VALIS and produced a wild, impassioned work that reads like a visionary alternate history of the United States. Agonizingly suspenseful, darkly hilarious, and filled with enough conspiracy theories to thrill the most hardened paranoid, Radio Free Albemuth is proof of Dicks stature as our centurys greatest science fiction writer. This prophetic novel of social control and political oppression is now to be turned into a major new movie starring Alanis Morrissette, which promises a provocative and edgy antidote to the summer blockbusters. Notes A new edition of the classic sci-fi novel, to tie in with a new film. Dick was the master of philosophical sci-fi, and many of his books have been adapted into successful films, including Bladerunner, Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly. The film is due out in June, and will star Alanis Morrissette. Author Biography Philip K Dick was born in Chicago in 1928 and lived most of his life in California. He attended college for a year at Berkeley. Apart from writing, his main interest was music. He won the Hugo Award for his classic novel of alternative history, The Man in the High Castle (1962). He was married five times and had three children. He died in March 1982. Lead title / Dicks cult status as an author has been transformed into a major cultural icon through Hollywoods adaptation of his stories into films: Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly / Radio Free Albemuth will be the 10th movie adaptation of a Dick story, set to be released in June 2008 / Official film website at / Competition: Iain M Banks, William Gibson Kirkus US Review This unpublished (c. 1976) semi-autobiographical novel, like The Divine Invasion (1981) and The Transmigration of Timothy Archer (1982), presents Dick (1928-82) in his latter-day role as a religious explicator; and formulates, in science-fictional guise, his notions on the identity and purpose of God - all set against the familiar Dick backdrop of creeping fascism, thought control and governmental paranoia. At the end of the 1960s, Ferris F. Fremont, having arranged the murder of all his political opponents, becomes President. Embodying Reagans charisma, Nixons deviousness, and Joe McCarthys compulsive pursuit of nonexistent subversive conspiracies, Fremont is enormously popular; thanks to his overtly fascist stance, even the Russians are won over. Meanwhile, obscure record-store clerk Nicholas Brady moulders away in Berkeley - until he starts receiving dream-messages from a super-being out in space, Valis (Vast Active Living Intelligence System), via an ancient alien satellite, Radio Free Albemuth; Valis guides Nicholas to change his life-style and actively oppose the Fremont regime. However, Fremont has organized a secret police force aimed at eliminating the mysterious "Aramchek" conspiracy - and they soon close in on Nicholas and his sf-writer friend, Philip K. Dick. Valis is, of course, God, and has been trying to help the oppressed people of Earth since Roman times. But this new effort by Valis is doomed: Fremont discovers Valis Aramchek identity; the Russians destroy the Albemuth satellite; and Nicholas is shot by the secret police. Well-constructed, absorbing at first, later somberly single-minded: a bleak and utterly depressing statement.
