The original is located in Florence, Italy and is considered to be on of the finest sculptures in the world.In 1971, the "David" statue was given to the city and to Augustana College by Thomas Fawick, a Sioux Falls Native who made a fortune as an inventor and automobile manufacturer. The statue of "David" generated considerable controversy in the city when it first arrived. Some felt a nude body displayed in public was not only in bad taste, but would have a bad effect on the community's moral values.
