About the Book:Many edible mushrooms are easily confused with species that are deadly poisonous. Careless identification, indiscriminate tasting, and ‘accidental nibbling can all result in poisoning; biologists and medical practitioners then face the task of identifying the implicated mushroom. This book was designed to help mycologists, medical practitioners, general biologists, and mushroom foragers identify quickly and accurately the larger poisonous fungi found in northern North America. It is also intended to aid researchers. The book is thus structured to accommodate both general and technical readers, with some of its general information repeated in greater detail in the later, more technical sections. Comprehensive and authoritative, it is illustrated with detailed line drawings and color photographs of most species. The first of the book’s two major parts serves as a basic and thorough introduction to fungal structure and taxonomy, including macroscopal and microscopal features. This information is clarified with line drawings and a glossary, and is followed by descriptions of the fungus families and both general and technical keys to the families and genera. The second, and larger, part of Poisonous Mushrooms deals with toxicity and the major categories of fungal poisoning. The authors introduce this section with an overview of the subject, a key to the types of fungal poisoning based on symptoms, a list of poisonous and edible look-alikes, and guidelines for safe collecting. To each of the seven categories of poisoning the authors devote a full chapter, listing the symptom producing genera and species, along with their toxicology and symptomatology, and descriptions that focus on the mushroom’s significant features Most of the species are illustrated with color photographs and line drawings that highlight microscopic characteristics. Useful references, when available, are provided for each species. About the authors:J.F. Ammirati is an associate professor in the department of botany and an adjunct associate professor of forest resources at the University of Washington. J.A. Traquair is a research scientist in fruit pathology at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Harrow, Ontario. P.A. Horgen is professor of Botany at the University of Toronto. Some Book Reviews:This very carefully researched and definitive work is destined to become the standard reference for all those working with toxic higher fungi in North America. It will also be of interest to physicians and amateur mycologists.--Harry D. Thiers, Professor of biology, San Francisco State University This is an outstanding contribution to the recognition of the conspicuous toxic fungi of North America. Considerably more detail is provided in the descriptions and in the discussion of the different species than can be found in standard guides. Colors are all important for mushroom identification, as any mycophagist can testify. The authors have provided excellent color plates as well as detailed drawings of microscopic features for most features. The book will be the standard for the identification of poisonous mushrooms in North America for many years. --Scott Redhead, Mycologist, Agriculture Canada, Ottawa This book is a valuable aid to the identification of toxic mushrooms. It will be useful to the professional mycologist dealing with suspected cases of mushroom poisonings. Because it is well organized and clearly written it will also be of interest to hospital workers, mushroom collectors, and naturalists in general. --David Malloch Professor of botany, University of Toronto ATTN OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS: BECAUSE EBAY INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING ONLY INSURES UP TO $100, THIS BOOK CAN ONLY BE MAILED DIRECTLY TO CUSTOMERS WITHIN THE UNITED STATES.
