Description: Original US Civil War Era Joseph Brother & Sons Sheffield Bowie Knife For your consideration is this Original US Civil War Era Joseph Brother & Sons Sheffield Bowie Knife. The wood handle is in very good used condition with no chips or cracks. All connections nice and tight. The overall length is 12", the blade length is 7 5/8", it is 1" at the widest. The blade has carbon spots as seen in pictures. There is no sheath. The blade is marked Joseph Brother & Sons, with the original Joseph Rodgers & Sons Star and Maltese Cross, originally registered in March 1682 by Benjamin Rich, however, it is with Rodgers that this mark will forever be associated and they registered it in 1764. The rivet pattern and materials are consistent with other Joseph Rogers and Sons similar pieces. Joseph Rogers and Sons markings varied especially in early days. That said, it could also be a copy from the period, which happened often. As mentioned below this was purchased in a 1970's auction, it was cataloged according to the antique dealer as "Civil War Piece Joseph Brother & Sons (Trade Mark of Cross) clip blade, pitted, wood 2 pc. grip". Please see pictures and make your own opinion regarding condition etc. I am not a weapons expert. This knife is from an extensive collection of world edged weapons assembled in the 1970's & 80's by a Northern Florida antique dealer. I do substantial research in trying to identify and fairly price rarer collectibles, but I am completely open and appreciate knowledgeable input, knowing mistakes will be made.
