Description: ELBAITE TOURMALINE w/ COOKEITE: Minas Gerais, Brazil: Dimensions: 6.9 x 5.4 x 3.1cm, small cabinet, 210 grams. This large, stout and colorful polychrome Tourmaline crystal shows both saturated translucent blue-green and pink colors with silvery yellow Cookeite accents on one side, the top and the back. The thin layer on the front of the crystal is easily translucent and strong backlighting reveals the crystals moderate overall translucency, more so on the left edge. This is definitely an old-timer from Brazil and probably dates back to the 1960s or 1970s given the the timing of Al Kidwell's collecting at those times. The crystal is strongly striated with the blue-green color variegated along its length and intermixed with pink on the right side and in the back. The top termination is also pink in the front where the termination is pretty well developed...this termination is not so well developed going away from the front, but it's present where it matters! The Cookeite essentially blankets the areas where it's present on the crystal and consists of 1 to 3 mm, platy, micaceous, scintillating crystals that provide great color and textural contrast to the attractive Elbaite colors. It glows on a shelf because of its color and the way the light plays on the striations. Ex. Al Kidwell collection with (his handwritten) label!
