The sole, while true minimalist, offers almost no traction and protection from rocks and other things on the road. When I wore these off the plane in Asian countries, man, you felt every little rock stabbing into your foot bed. The worst were at the wet markets when I slipped every other minute or so on grounds that were just slightly damp or humid. Basically aside from the airport and on the plane, wearing the original 1st generation Furoshiki was basically making your own day worst. The improved Fuwa gives you a minimalist shoe, but gives you minimal protection (although some purists might hate it) with a slightly cushioned footbed. Well, something has got to give if you want a shoe you won't regretting bringing on trips and some hikes. In addition, the sole is actually a sole with grip, meaning that you'll actually grip the floor in dangerous situations like hikes or trying to get from one place to another with 50 lbs of luggage in a backpack. Also makes it perfect for the gym, which the original Furoshiki couldn't offer since the thin yet, hard sole was basically has no grip. Not to mention, the original Furoshiki was not good for people that are used to wide toe boxes.Basically it was like binding your foot and not really the best for long sits and hot weather. The Fuka gives you more toe box room and gives you a little bit more room for your toes to wiggle.
