Description: NEWFOUNDLAND 107 4c PURPLE PRINCE ALBERT 1911 ROYAL FAMILY P13.8X14.2 MPH CV$60 Please read the TERMS OF SALE below prior to bidding. BID WITH CONFIDENCE - SATISFACTION GUARANTEED NEWFOUNDLAND 107 4c PURPLE PRINCE ALBERT 1911 ROYAL FAMILY P13.8X14.2 MPH CV$60 Four cent, Prince Albert (later King George VI) stamp from the Coronation/Royal Family issue of 1911-1916, purple, perf 13.8x14.2. There are at least 7 listed perf varieties in the Royal Family issue - 5 for the 4 cent value. The 4 cent stamp has been reported as being printed using Analine ink (colored through paper) - recorded perf 14.0x14.0 only. Approximately 50% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging. Toned perf at top center mentioned for the record. Prince Albert (1895-1952) became King George VI (1936-1952) when his brother King Edward VIII abdicated the throne in December 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, a US divorcee in 1937. As Prince Albert, he served in the Royal Navy (1909-1917), qualified as a pilot with the Royal Air Force in 1919, and was President of the Industrial Welfare Society. He married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923. They had 2 children, daughters Margaret and Elizabeth who became Queen Elizabeth II upon the death of her father King George the VI in 1952. The design image used in the engraving plates to print the 4 cent Prince Albert stamp was taken from a 1909 W. D. Downey studio photograph. Recess printed from engraved plates on medium weight, crisp, off white wove paper with vertical mesh, white to yellowish toned gum. The designs of this issue were produced in relatively small formats resulting in stamps being printed very close together. Most stamps have very narrow margins or none at all with perforations cutting into one or more sides. Stamps with reasonably decent centering and perforations clear of the design on all sides may be considered as very fine for this issue. The June 19, 1911 coronation of King George V provided members of the British Commonwealth opportunities to commemorate the event through the production of new stamp issues. Newfoundland lead the way with an unprecedented set of stamps depicting all the members of the Royal household - some for the first (and only) time ever. The 11 stamp set included 10 Royal portrait images plus a 15 cent high value stamp featuring the Newfoundland Colonial seal, officially granted by King George IV in 1827. This "Great Seal of the Colony" depicts Mercury, the god of commerce, presenting to Britannia, a fisherman bearing gifts from the bounty of the sea (Newfoundland's life blood). The central image repeated that designed by Raymond Ostrander Smith (1873-1933) for the 30 cent value of the 1897 "Cabot" issue. Under contact with Whitehead, Morris and Company Limited (Whitehead, Morris and Company did not have the equipment necessary to print stamps from engraved plates): Perkins, Bacon and Company apparently recess printed the 1c 2c, 3c, 4c, 5c, and 10c value stamps from dies and engraving plates produced by De La Rue and Company of London. Printing of the 6c, 8c, 9c, 12, and 15c higher value stamps was sub-contracted to A. Alexander and Sons Limited of London using engraved plates provided by MacDonald and Sons. Whitehead, Morris most likely gummed and perforated all the stamps and prepared them for shipment to Newfoundland. Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot. I am confident that a mutually satisfactory solution can be worked out to any problem that might develop. Please give me a chance to fix something that is not satisfactory to you before leaving negative feedback. Although 3 and 4 star DSR scores may be considered "good" by just about any reasonable standard, they aren't as far as ebay is concerned. Anything but 5 ratings in a seller's DSR score may impact their ability to offer items for sale on ebay. Therefore, having an opportunity to earn your highest rating would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your consideration. TERMS OF SALE SHIPPING/HANDLING/INSURANCE: FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING PAYMENT: payment by PayPal only. Placing a bid indicates that you have read and accept the terms of sale. Please don't hesitate to contact me through the "Ask Seller A Question" link on eBay if you have questions concerning a lot. Due to a proliferation of fake eBay email messages, I will not respond to questions sent directly to my email address.
