Description: This is a rare and very unique Native American hand-carved ceremonial "peace pipe" artifact made from lava rock, rawhide and wood (tree branch). The one-of-a-kind museum quality pipe is a beautiful representation of Native American culture and artistry. This artifact is a must-have for collectors of Native American artifacts and those interested in Native American culture. The pipe is a testament to the rich history and artistry of Native American culture and will be a prized possession for those who appreciate it. The base of the pipe is carved from one piece of lava rock (estimated to be over 5,000-7,000 years old), and is mounted to a lovely reddish-brown wood tree branch, which are bound together with rawhide (animal hide) and appears to be 100-300 years old. There is a small hold drilled inside the stick. ((Please note the pipe has not been used or tested to see if it is operational. The pipe has been left as is since acquiring. )) The rawhide and carved lava rock are tightly bound and wrapped around a natural branch. The rawhide is stitched together with rawhide string. There is minor aging to two areas of the rawhide along the branch area, where the rawhide has cracked and broken off. The minor damage appears to be minimal as the structural integrity is still strong. The remaining rawhide is in great condition. There is no damage to the lava rock, and minor aging and scuffs on the top of the wooden stick. The pipe measures nearly 23" long, with a 5" lava rock, and 18" stick (approximately). The pipe is 2.5 to 3" at the widest point of the rock. The wooden branch diameter is just under 1". This piece was obtained through an estate sale, with fourth generation currently in possession. The history indicates the lava rock ceremony pipe was purchased by the owner's great grandmother (who at the time was a collector of Native American artifacts) from a collector in Pasadena during the 1930s. A note was obtained along with the artifacts (pictured). Past down three generations, this piece was found along with two other artifacts, (including a stone axe and Shayman bladder rattle in separate listings) which have all been stored in a unit for nearly 30 years. Please be advised, the branch section appears to have been drilled with modern drill bits/drill as the hole is nearly perfectly round. This information is passed through ownership details, estate trustees and nursing home stories, and any additional information or comments is welcomed in the message section.
