Sophisticated Gold leafing dates back to the 1500’s and was performed by applying 22-24K gold leaf to the surface of the cooled glass vessel in the following manner; Gold leaf was supplied with a paper backing; the artisan would prepare a water and gum arabic paste which was placed on the host glass vessel and then the gold leaf was carefully positioned on glass and then the pre-conceived decoration was cut away utilizing an incised stylus. With the paper backing,the thin layer of gold was easier to cut using sharp instruments; When the adhesive dried, the backing of paper was peeled away leaving the artisan’s gold design on the glass; after drying, the glass vessel was then lowered into an annealing oven and heated to about 950 degrees Fahrenheit; the punty was later used to retrieve the vessel from the annealing oven and it was returned to the glass furnace; when the vessel was re-introduced into the very hot glory hole of the furnace -- the walls of the glass would soften and the gold now would adhere and permanently meld to the host vessel. The raised enameling was done in a similar fashion.
