I believe they were made by a company named Zealandia back in the late 1970's or early 1980's. Mother of pearl (MoP) is made from mollusk shells and very common in the South Pacific Islands region. Harvesting the MoP involves delicately removing the inner lining of the mollusk shell (also called nacre) without causing any damage. Skilled artisans then cut, shape, and polish the nacre to create slabs or individual pieces. The labor-intensive nature of this process adds to the overall cost of MoP.
