Description: Cast brass made in Israel, circa 1950. Hebrew word "Hanukkah" written across oil jug between two flames. Cast with green patina overlay with gilded accents. Marked on the bottom "Made in Israel Pat No. 1427". The Hanukkah lamp commemorates the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, shamash, serves as a help candle used to light the others from right to left. The Temple’s menorah, one of its most important ritual objects, burning for one day instead, the flame stayed alight for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be found, which made this the basis for the festival of lights celebration of Hanukkah.
