The Guardians of the Universe gave them a power ring fueled by willpower to protect Space Sector 586. They are a vegetation creature from the planet J586 who was recruited as one the first Green Lanterns. They would later go on to become a member of the Darkstars. Medphyll was created by John Broome and Gil Kane, first appearing in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #11. (1962) The Green Lantern Corps is a fictional intergalactic law enforcement agency and superhero team appearing in comics published by DC Comics. They patrol the farthest reaches of the DC Universe at the behest of the Guardians, a race of immortals residing on the planet Oa.
