Description: THE JUMPING FROG OF CALAVERAS COUNTY, And Other Sketches Written by Mark Twain (edited by John Paul) and published by C. H. Webb, New York, copyright 1867. This book is the 1870 issue which I believe makes it the fourth. This is basically the same book as the 1867 edition but lacks the inserted ad leaf before the title page which is found only in the first printing and it has 1870 as a date on the title page. Although not the first year of issue, all printings of this book were printed in the one or two thousands for only around 5 printings. It is one of the rarest of Twain’s major works. The Jumping Frog was Twain's first published work and first great success as a writer. It collected 27 stories that were previously published in magazines and newspapers. The first edition was issued in seven colors (with no priority) — blue, brown, green, lavender, plum, red, and terra-cotta. This is a plum copy, but nearly all the existing books of this color (as well as the lavender, red and blue copies) are faded. This one is no exception—the front board and spine were faded brown when I got the book. The original color is visible on the rear board. In the title story, the narrator retells a story he heard from a bartender, Simon Wheeler, at the Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, about the gambler Jim Smiley. The narrator describes him: "If he even seen a straddle bug start to go anywheres, he would bet you how long it would take him to get to wherever he going to, and if you took him up, he would foller that straddle bug to Mexico but what he would find out where he was bound for and how long he was on the road.” DESCRIPTION: 6 3/4 x 4 7/8 inches--195 pages First Edition/later printing hardcover CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in very good condition with some restoration. The book haas been rebound and recased into its original cover. The cloth hardcover was mostly faded to a brown color, the spine was rotted and in pieces. The spine and board corners have been repaired. The cover was recolored using cloth dye and acrylic paint—its not the exact color, but close. The hinges have been reinforced with new paper, but the original endpapers were retained. The interior is clean with no major marks, underlining, tears or odor, but there are water stains in some of the margins on many if not most pages. The paper is somewhat toned with age—but the pages are not brittle. The endpapers are very thin and somewhat delicate at the edges. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages. As with all antique books, care will be needed if you plan to read it.
