Description: this is a gorgeous impressionistic vintage landscape oil painting by artist Dorothy Franz (1904 - 1972) - Franz was born in Chicago, but spent much of her adult life as both an artist & teacher of still life & landscape oil paintings - she lived both in Indiana & on the East Coast where she was associated with Southern Vermont Artists in Manchester, VT, as well as with the North Shore Artists Assoc. in Gloucester, MA - while in Gloucester, she painted fishing trawlers in the various Cape Ann Harbors; & when in Vermont, she painted landscapes which included rural areas with streams & mountains & woodlands - I believe that this oil painting was done by her of such a Vermont landscape - it is a striking painting due to her very impressionistic, almost abstract style of painting where she used strong thick brush strokes to emphasize various elements of her painting - in the foreground of the painting, the viewer sees a meandering stream coming right at him in the low center section of the picture - Franz emphasizes the ripples & waves in the current of the stream by using think & bold horizontal strokes of blue-green & off-white colors intermixed within the oncoming stream - Franz painted the dirt banks of the stream in thick brown & pinkish-brown strokes, & used thick green & pinkish-white brush strokes to depict the foliage on the right stream bank - there are trees on the left side of the picture as well as on the right side of the stream, but, they are sparse; & painted with dark brown colors for the tree trunks, & very light blue-green colors for the leaves - beside the two trees on the left is a third slim tree with a flaming pinkish-red burst of color at the base of its trunk suggesting a growth of pinkish wildflowers - in the mid-section of the painting beyond the three trees, the viewer sees a burst of white & blue colors suggesting another growth of wildflowers - beyond the lower portion of the stream in the foreground there appears to be a low earthen dam going across the water above which is more meandering stream water where the current with totally different colors than those in the lower part of the stream - in this upper part of the stream, the artist used thick beige & off-white horizontal strokes to depict the water's surface - at this point of depth in the painting, the artist used a very impressionistic style to depict the landscape using a palette of muted gray, light green, pink, orange, & even purple to depict the mountains in the far background - the sky just above the muted purple mountains was done with a pale blue color with floating clouds of off-white & pale beige colors which were applied with heavy brush strokes - this is one of those very impressionistic paintings which is best viewed from a distance of 6 feet or so in order to get the real impact of this lush woodsy landscape which was probably located in the area of Manchester, Vermont where the artist had spent some of her life - the painting measures 12" x 16" sight size, & is in very good vintage condition - it is well-enhanced by its original dark stained wooden frame with a gold colored inner liner which measures 15" x 19", & is in very good condition -
