Description: On offer are four volumes on the subject of writer Dashiell Hammett, dean of the hard-boiled school of detective fiction and creator of such characters as Sam Spade, Nick and Nora Charles, and The Continental Op. The titles included are: Shadow Man: The Life of Dashiell Hammett, an excellent hardcover biography by Richard Layman, published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in 1981. This is a first edition copy, 2nd printing. 285 pages. Condition of this book is very good, though the dust cover has some condition issues with a few small nicks and tears and a small scotch tape fix at the top of the front cover. The book itself, however, is in very nice shape, with a solid spine, no remainder marks or signs of previous ownership, no highlighting, underlining, writing, torn or missing pages or other obvious damage. See photos. Hammett: A Life at the Edge, another good hardcover biography by William F. Nolan, published by Congdon & Weed in 1983. 276 pages. This is a first edition. Condition is excellent, with a very clean dust jacket, solid spine, no remainder marks or signs of previous ownership, no highlighting, underlining, writing, torn or missing pages or other obvious damage. The only issue is a rectangle of browning on the first page that does not affect any text. See photos. Dashiell Hammett, a paperback critical study published by Frederick Ungar in 1984. 174 pages. Condition is very nice, with no remainder marks or signs of previous ownership, no highlighting, underlining, writing, torn or missing pages or other obvious damage. A nice copy. See photos. Dashiell Hammett, a hardcover critical study by William Marling, published by Twayne Publishers of Boston in 1983. Another excellent volume in great shape (there is no dust jacket, as published I believe), with no remainder marks or signs of previous ownership, no highlighting, underlining, writing, torn or missing pages or other obvious damage. See photos. I’m offering this lot of four books for a true bargain price, (see other comparable listings on eBay or on Amazon). Take advantage now because someone is going to snatch these up! All photos are of the actual items being offered for sale, with no stock photos. These books are from my personal collection in a non-smoking environment. Enjoy! Production Description Shadow Man: The Life of Dashiell HammettYears of research make this biography of the first great hardboiled detective writer a must-read. Very good on Hammett's time as a Pinkerton, and also his later years as a Hollywood hack and a Communist sympathiser hounded by the FBI. Fine discussion of his many short stories, many of which are hard to come by. Hammett: A Life at the EdgeHammett: A Life at the Edge by William Nolan is a straightforward, informative biography. The landmark events of Dashiell Hammett's life are discussed objectively and with a minimal amount of the overly zealous hero worship often found in such accounts. The book's major areas of concentration are: Hammett's evolution as a writer, his thirty year relationship with playwright Lillian Hellman and the blatant contradictions which characterized his tumultuous life. On this latter point, one of the most notable contradictions is the disconnect between Hammett's writing style and his personal habits. As an author, Hammett was noted for crisp, succinct, thoroughly disciplined writing. In direct contrast to this is the undisciplined, binge drinking, spendthrift manner in which he lived for most of his professional career. Hammett: A Life at the Edge is an interesting, worthwhile biography. Highly recommended. Dashiell Hammett by Dennis DooleyExamines Hammett's major stories and novels, identifies common themes, and describes his contribution to detective fiction. Dashiell Hammett by William MarlingLike one of Hammett's novels, William Marling's study of the author is brief, incisive, and packed with acute observations. Marling draws on several previous studies of the man and his work to provide the essential details of Hammett's life and a cogent evaluation of his stories and five novels. For the serious Hammett fan, this is a true treasure.
