Description: EARLY PRIMITIVE HANDFORGED IRON LOG MARKING HAMMER w/PICK END ~ 5R4This is a great piece of logging history. In the mid to late 1800's during the heyday of the logging industry in Michigan, Bay City's riverbanks were lined with sawmills. As the logs were cut in the North woods the many logging companies floated their cut logs via the river to transport them to the sawmills for processing. The logs were marked with a brand owned by each company using one of these hammers. This allowed the sawmill to identify the owner of the logs as they reached the mills for processing. This hammer head is double ended with the initials 5R4. The head measures 8-3/4" X 1-1/4" X 1-1/2". The mark is 1" diameter. This is part of a very large logging collection that we have decided to offer for sale after enjoying collecting them for many years. THANKS FOR LOOKING LG20Logging Case
