Khmer Multi-Armed Male Deity: Title: Rare Antique Bronze Standing Figure of a Multi-Armed Male Deity. Khmer 'Baphuon' Style. 16/17th Century, Cambodia. Overview: A superb Khmer Figure of a Male Deity, probably that of 'Shiva', beautifully executed in traditional 'Baphuon' style of the Khmer Angkor Wat Era, elegantly modeled with intricate detail, measuring 16.25 inches (41.28cm) in height. Description: A superb Khmer Male Deity Figure, probably that of 'Shiva', stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional 'Baphuon' style, from Khmer mythology. The figure is presented in its unrepaired condition as found, elegantly modeled from the lost wax method. As with images from this period, the ornamentation reflects a perfect mastery of sculpting and fluidity. Facial features of the statue retain characteristics of the previous Khleang style, but appear more delicate and refine. Typical of Baphuon (1010-1080) style sculptures, the figure appears lithe, slightly muscled, with a youthful face, and serene introspective gaze. xxxx The deity is masterfully modeled in realistic human form, standing in a strong frontal posture on a small square plinth. He stands in 'Samabhanga' with his four arms holding attributes, wearing a short stylized sampot worn high on the hips and hung low at the waist, with the navel visible, secured by a plain belt, fashioned with neatly incised pocket folds on the left thigh, and complimented by an ornate dagger on the right. Typical of Baphuon style male figures, his garment is ornamented with a butterfly knot at the back. xxxx The face appears indigenous to Khmer with serene expression, incised almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows, a well-shaped broad nose, wide mouth, and elongated pierced earlobes. The hair is tightly braided in vertical rows, drawn onto the top of the head to form a bulb-shaped Chignon, held in place by a jeweled band, and topped with a floral lotus. Remarks: The bronze figure is an early surviving example of statuary recovered from northern Cambodia. The piece reflects characteristics linked to the Baphuon period, and demonstrates the regional style of an era who's art and culture was once under the rule of the Khmer Empire for several centuries, and is distinguished here by the exquisite craftsmanship and charming naturalism in which the figure possesses. The bronze remains in solid condition with some minor casting flaws, pitting, and minor surface degradation as would be expected given the conditions in which it was maintained.
