Description: "MUTTER MIT KIND AUF DEM ARM ", 1910 ORIGINAL POSTHUMOUS ETCHING BY THE GERMAN EXPRESSIONIST ARTIST AND MASTER PRINTMAKER KATHE KOLLWITZ (1867-1945) This original circa 1946-1948 posthumous impression etching, featuring a mother holding her child, is by the esteemed German artist Kathe Kollwitz. Unsigned edition of unknown size, as published and printed by Alexander von der Becke, circa 1946-1948, with von der Becke’s three-line Berlin-Halensee blindstamp at the lower right corner of the plate mark: A.v.d. Becke Kunstverlag BERLIN-HALENSEE. Gallerist Alexander von der Becke founded his publishing imprint in 1931 when he took over control of Kathe Kollwitz's prints after her longtime representative Galerie Emil Richter was bankrupted. Von der Becke created many prints of Kollwitz's plates from 1931-1941. The Gestapo closed his business in 1941 and confiscated his stock. He reestablished his business after the war from 1946-1948, and subsequently issued posthumous reprints of the thirty Kollwitz etching plates that survived the war. After his death in November 1958, wife Johanna and son Bernhard continued the business and opened a branch in Munich in 1963, publishing posthumous Kollwitz reprints with the two-line “A.V.D. Becke Muenchen 22” blindstamp, until 1972. The image (plate size) measures 7 1/2 x 5 inches (190 x 125 mm), printed in a warm black ink on heavy cream wove paper, the sheet with margins measures 12 7/8 x 10 inches (327 x 254 mm). The etching comes unframed. PLEASE NOTE CONDITION: There are paper hinge remnants on the verso top edge, otherwise the etching is in excellent condition, a crisp impression, with no evidence of any damage to the image. Kathe Kollwitz, born 1867 in Königsberg (modern day Kaliningrad), is one of the most important German artists of the 20th century. She addressed social and personal issues and applied them in her drawings, graphics and sculpture. Kollwitz, known worldwide for her graphic work, depicted the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class, portraying the unvarnished reality of life of the people in her immediate environment. In 1919, she was the first woman ever to be admitted to the Prussian Academy of Arts. ________________________________ ATTENTION! FULL REFUND GIVEN ONLY IF ITEM RECEIVED IS NOT AS DESCRIBED.
