John Herbert's "FORTUNE and MEN'S EYES" Al Mancini 1968 Original London Playbill

Description: This is a rare October 1968 programme (playbill) from the Original West End production of the controversial gay-themed prison drama "FORTUNE and MEN'S EYES" at the Comedy Theatre in London. (The Original Off-Broadway production opened February 23rd, 1967 at New York's Actors Playhouse and ran for 382 performances. The London production opened October 17th, 1968 and survived for only six weeks.) ..... The play starred PETER MARINKER as "Rocky", ROBERT HOWAY as "Smitty", LOUIS NEGIN as "Mona", GEORGE MARGO as "Holy-Face" and AL MANCINI as the street-wise drag queen "Queenie". The role of the Warders (Guards) were played by JOHN HIGGINS, ROBERT SHERMAN, TONY SIBBALD and CARL OATLEY ..... Historical note: The play's 1968 West Coast production was directed by SAL MINEO, who also starred in the role of "Rocky". This groundbreaking play was the first stage production to include a simulated rape scene (full nudity) between two men. Up until this time, there had never been a nude sex scene portrayed on stage even by members of the opposite sex. This was the second London production to portray full frontal nudity on stage. Lord Chamberlain, the official Censor, had lifted the ban on nudity the previous month when the rock musical "Hair" opened at London's Shaftesbury Theatre ..... CREDITS: Book by JOHN HERBERT; Sets and Costumes designed by JOHN NAPIER; Directed by CHARLES MAROWITZ; Produced by MICHAEL WHITE and LARRY PARNES in association with WILLIAM J. GESLING ..... DETAILS: The 28 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, individual photos of the leading actors and bios of each of the leading actors and the playwright ..... CONDITION: With the exception of minor edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
