Description: A very high-grade COMPLETE set of 154 cards makes up what most know as 1961 Fleer Baseball Greats. It was issued in two series. Series 1 is cards 1-88. Series 2 is cards 89-154, and was produced in 1962 - and in lesser numbers. Commons in the 89-154 series carry a premium over commons in the first series. PSA has certified three of the biggest cards, all in NMT 7. #14 Ty Cobb, #75 Babe Ruth and #152 from the high series, Ted Williams. I have imaged every card in the set. Please forgive the seemingly-haphazard presentation. I did not originally intend to scan all the fronts, just the bigger Hall of Famers. However, once that was done...this set is so loaded with Hall of Famers that I couldn't leave them out. So, here is the layout: Images 1-2. The PSA cards, front and back. Images 3-4. The series 1 checklist card #1 and series 2 checklist card #89, both unchecked. I grade the first as EX-MT and the second as EX, even with a very light wrinkle on the reverse in the upper left corner, that cannot be seen in the scan. Images 5-6. The other (12) weighted cards, as per the PSA set registry. These are the cards with a weight higher than 1.00 for 1st series and 1.20 for 2nd series. Image 7. The famed trio 'Tinker - Evers - Chance'. Image 8. (8) Owners, MLB executives and managers. Images 9-11. Hall of Fame position players (except Marion). Images 12-13. Hall of Fame pitchers (except VanderMeer). Images 14-16. The remaining Hall of Famers, alphabetically (by groups of 4). Images 17-23. The remaining non-HOFers, alphabetically (by groups of 4), though HOF Hal Newhouser slipped into this group somehow. Image 24. Enlarged images of the cards I grade below Excellent. The flaws do not show that well in the scans so I will note them. Gehrig, Haas, Leonard, Pennock - all VG-EX due to corner wear. Camilli, Good, crease, corner wear; Frisch, Good, vertical crease running thru center of card in bottom half; Lyons, Good, notch at the lower left edge, corner wear; Cy Young, Very Good, light crease across upper right and lower left corners. This is about 5% of the set that's below Excellent. Strong grading possibilities with a good number of additional PSA 7s and I'm sure some 8s. Three of the biggest are already done. If professional grading is not that important but uniformity of condition is, then the amount of upgrading to all EX or better will be small. I intended to make the point that I thought Fleer padded this set out with a lot of journeymen players when they expanded to 154 cards from their 1960 entry to the market with a 79-card set that had only 3 non-HOFers, but in retrospect, they filled it out with some very good players who do not have a lot of cards to collect. At the time the 2nd series was produced, 57 in this set had already entered Cooperstown. That number is now 97 - not counting those on the two checklists. There are some really good names among those other 55. Every card (except the PSA) are in a Card Saver or similar semi-rigid holder. Tracked and insured shipping is factored into the Buy it Now price. When making offers, keep in mind that I must factor my cost into my decision-making.
