GAR Quartermaster's sword

Description: The GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) was the largest Union veteran's association and wore swords with their blue uniforms. These swords were made after the style of the regulation "1860" Staff & Field Officers Sword that was worn until 1902. The Ames Sword company made many of the US swords prior to and during the Civil War, and after the war made many of the fraternal organization swords used by Masons, Oddfellows, Knights of Columbus and so on. The name "Ames Sword Co" means that it was made after 1880, when the Ames Manufacturing Company spun off the swordmaking business into a separate company.
