Description: Patriotic Civil War Token Fuld 37/434a (copper) R-1 NGC MS-64 BN This token was distributed by New York City token maker William Bridgens. Not everyone was in favor of allowing privately issued tokens to circulate as coins during the Civil War. Many argued that these private tokens should be banned from commerce. Indeed, Congress did outlaw the use of private tokens as substitutes for U.S. coins in 1864. This token, likely distributed in 1863, seems to address the controversy regarding Civil War tokens. It argues that the token, struck from U.S. copper, should be accepted by the public. While Congress eventually went against this sentiment, it is interesting to note that the U.S. copper-nickel cent was replaced by a bronze cent closely resembling most Civil War tokens in the same year that privately issued tokens were banned from commerce.
