Description: A fine cherry tall case clock with a beautifully carved fretwork crest and ornate brass finials on the hood, a tombstone form glass door opening to a conforming metal clock face with a polychrome decorated urn in the arch, fruit and gilt scrollwork painted spandrels, a Roman numeral dial with seconds dial and calendar aperture, signed “F. Wingate, Augusta, No. 287,” flanked by corner support columns, over a birdseye maple veneered waist door with banded border, flanked by carved corner columns with brass capitals, over a paneled base with nicely turned feet. The original brass pendulum bob is present, along with two weights, and faint graphite inscriptions can be found on the inside of the waist door. This beautiful clock has an eight day brass movement and dates to circa 1820. Frederick Wingate (1782-1864) was actively working from 1804-1838 as a silversmith, watch, and clockmaker in Augusta, Maine, and was known to have numbered many of his tall clocks. This clock is in very good condition, with some dial craquelure, shrinkage cracks, minor imperfections, and light wear commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 94” H x 19 ⅛” W x 8 ¾” D.
